At work this morning, I have had some time to read more from The Giver. I'm learning more about the characters and how they do not have any memories of color or pain. Everything in the community is the same, which they call Sameness. The Committee, or government, chooses to have their world be this way for a few reasons. For one, they do not want their people feeling pain from past memories or anything. Secondly, they do not want them to have the freedom to choose, for fear of choosing wrong and thereby getting hurt or causing disruption among others.
This concept got me thinking about our free will as humans. I cannot imagine a world where we had no choices or pain. I think that sometimes the beauty of life can be found through pain and wrong decisions. The pains and choices we make shape us into the individuals that we are. What do you think? Would it be best to not have any memory of pain and all be the same in an innocent world, or would you rather experience all the world has to offer? Just something to think about!
